Bangkok's 'Mexican' Gangsters

Thai gangsters are an example of cultural appropriation because they are adopting many elements of a cultural group to which they do not belong. These people might be identified with some typical elements or symbols of mexican gangsters and for that reason they decide to use these elements outside of their original cultural context. Clothes, tattoos and hairstyle are some examples of things with a cultural meaning to mexican gangsters but these things are now used as part of the thais' fashion.

We can learn from the article and the video that, as mexican gangsters, Bangkok's gangster are a group of people who share the same interests and have a lot of things in common. Both, mexican gangsters and Bangkok's gangsters, are part of a subculture. It is clear that what thai appreciate from mexican culture is their aesthetic, but they are not interested in fights or dealing in illicit drugs.

  1. Your writing is interesting and I agree with you because both Mexican and Thai gangsters have some aspects in common, but the Thai gangsters are a subculture and their main obsession is the style and aesthetic of Mexican gangsters.

  2. Diana, I agree with you because it´s evident that exists a cultural appropriation of the Thai Ganster because they are adopting elements of another cultural group as the Mexican Gangsters, the only difference is that the lifestyle of being a Thai Gangster is a that they are more pacific people that aren't looking for fight, in this way the bad stereotypes that people have about gangsters could decrease thanks to the labor of the Thai Gangsters.

  3. Diana I agree with you. Both are subcultures but Bangkok's 'Mexican' Gangsters want to copy parts from Mexicans. Mexicans created their own subculture. They have several similarities but in others aspects they have differences like in fights and drugs. For me, Bangkok's 'Mexican' Gangsters adapted to their life this subculture and copy things in that they are interested.
